Belopa, August 12, 2024 — The Directorate General of Environmental and Forestry Law Enforcement of the Ministry of Environment and Forestry, through the Sulawesi Regional Environmental and Forestry Law Enforcement and Security Center (Gakkum LHK), has conducted a field verification regarding public complaints against PT Masmindo Dwi Area (MDA) on July 23-27, 2024.The field verification by Gakkum LHK, as stated in Assignment Letter number: ST.691/BPPHLHK.3/SWI/GKM.2.1/B/07/2024, aims to determine the level of compliance of business and/or activity persons in charge with the provisions stipulated in business permits or government approval related to environmental permits and regulations in the field of environmental protection and management. As well as following up on public complaints number 25/ADU-LHK/BPPHLHK.3/5/2024 regarding the gold mining activities of PT Masmindo Dwi Area, which are suspected of causing flash floods in Luwu, Sidrap, and Wajo Regencies, South Sulawesi Province.From the results of the verification, Gakkum LHK concluded that in terms of environmental permits, MDA's planned activities are in accordance with those stated in the 2019 Environmental Impact Assessment (AMDAL) document and the current conditions.Regarding public complaints alleging that MDA's activities have caused floods and landslides, Gakkum LHK has conducted field verification and stated that no correlation was found between MDA's activities and the flood and landslide disasters that occurred in May 2024.Responding to the results of the field verification, MDA's Head of Mining Engineering (KTT), Mustafa Ibrahim, emphasized the company's commitment to regulatory compliance and environmental responsibility. Luwu.&nbsp;Gold miner&nbsp;Masmindo Dwi Area (MDA) has become the first company in Luwu Regency, South Sulawesi to use 100 percent&nbsp;renewable energy for four consecutive years. This commitment to environmental sustainability is demonstrated through the use of green electricity, provided via the Renewable Energy Certificate (REC) service from state utility company PLN (Persero).The collaboration with PLN has positioned MDA as the pioneer company in Luwu to adopt the REC service. Rathy Shinta Utami, Manager of PLN UP3 Palopo, explained that REC addresses the need for decarbonization in the industrial and business sectors. This initiative is part of the broader effort to achieve Net Zero Emissions (NZE) by 2060.“This collaboration proves that PLN and MDA are playing an active role in reducing emissions by promoting the use of environmentally friendly energy,” Rathy said on Friday.The REC service by PLN enables customers to gain international recognition for their use of renewable energy in a transparent and accountable manner. Each REC certifies that one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity consumed by the customer is sourced from renewable or non-fossil power plants.PLN UP3 Palopo has commended MDA&nbsp;for its participation in using clean energy. MDA has consistently utilized 100 percent&nbsp;clean energy from 2021 to 2024, amounting to approximately 600,000 kilowatt-hours (kWh), equivalent to 600 units of REC.“Purchasing REC is the simplest way for customers to enjoy clean energy from PLN,” Rathy said. “Building their own power plants would require significant investment and time, but by purchasing REC from PLN, MDA has officially become a customer using clean energy.”Rathy further explained that the connected power capacity for MDA is 197,000 Volt-Amperes (VA), which will increase to 1,110,000 VA by August 2024. As of Wednesday, May 8, 2024, landslide points on the village roads connecting the MDA site area with the nearest village (Ranteballa Village) have been gradually overcome since Saturday, May 4, 2024.Rain in the Latimojong area is still quite intense, and the locations affected by landslides are still unstable, making it a challenge for the MDA team to fully open access. In addition, the bad weather conditions also make it difficult to distribute the fuel needed for the operation of vehicles and heavy equipment. Since sending fuel by land is not possible, fuel and logistics were delivered to the MDA site area by air using helicopters on Tuesday, May 7, 2024.Opening access to the Poros Village Road Ranteballa – Kadundung is still a priority.
