Village Safari in Latimojong: Luwu Regency Government and MDA Strengthen Coordination through a Working Group to Empower Village Economic Centers

PT Masmindo Dwi Area (MDA) appreciates and fully supports the commitment of the Luwu Regency Government to leverage the presence of mining operations for broader economic equity through the strengthening of village-based economic centers. This commitment was reaffirmed by Luwu Regent H. Patahudding during a village safari in Boneposi Village, Latimojong Subdistrict, on Tuesday (October 7, 2025).

This visit followed a recent audience between MDA and the Luwu Regency Government together with the Forkopimda in Belopa, which discussed investment protection and equitable distribution of benefits for the community.

Accompanying the Regent were Deputy Regent Muh. Dhevy Bijak Pawindu, Luwu Police Chief AKBP Adnan Pandibu, Military Liaison Officer Major Kav. Suparman, while from the company were MDA Director Tammam Jannata, Head of Mining Engineering Mustafa Ibrahim, and members of the MDA management team.

In his remarks, the Regent emphasized that local employment remains a top priority. Official data provided by MDA shows that hundreds of employees currently come from villages surrounding the mining area. However, the Regent also noted that according to population data, Latimojong Subdistrict has seen an influx of hundreds of new residents from outside the area in 2025. This, he said, presents its own challenges, as local residents must not be displaced from job opportunities.

To address this, the Regent underscored the crucial role of the Investment Acceleration Working Group (POKJA) in overseeing the recruitment process. “POKJA exists to ensure that workforce distribution is carried out fairly and transparently, so no village becomes overly dominant or left behind. It also serves as an official channel to convey aspirations, formulate solutions, and maintain that all processes run according to the agreed framework. This way, the community gains certainty, the company can operate smoothly, and development benefits can be felt more quickly,” he stated.

The Regent further reminded the public not to rely solely on the company. “The presence of MDA should serve as a catalyst for village economic growth. Let’s create business opportunities and build new economic hubs so that every household can access sustainable sources of livelihood. We hope that the community continues to support MDA’s operations so that production can begin soon, bringing in revenues to help fund infrastructure development around Latimojong,” he added.

In a separate statement, MDA Director Tammam Jannata reiterated the company’s commitment to fully supporting the local government’s directives. “We agree that the benefits of this project must be distributed equitably. Our presence is intended to contribute to community welfare and to empower and drive the development of village centralization initiatives — for example, through village cooperatives — as a means to promote sustainable economic growth," he explained.

At the end of the event, the Regent reminded that expressing community aspirations is a right protected by law. However, under Article 162 of the Mining Law (UU Minerba), such actions must not take the form of illegal acts such as road blockages or disruptions to mining operations. Aspirations should instead be conveyed through official channels — either to POKJA or via the company’s complaint line at 0817-111-001 — ensuring that community interests are safeguarded without hindering collective progress.

With this shared commitment, the Luwu Regency Government, Forkopimda, and MDA hope that the social and economic climate in Latimojong will remain conducive, allowing broader employment and business opportunities while ensuring that community welfare continues to grow alongside the progress of the Awak Mas Project.
